According to a result of \textit{P. Balmer} and \textit{M. Schlichting} [J. Algebra 236, No. 2, 819--834 (2001; Zbl 0977.18009)] the idempotent completion of a triangulated category has a natural structure of a triangulated category. The paper under review studies relationship between completion and recollement of triangulated categories, which was introduced by \textit{A. A. Beilinson, J. Bernstein} and \textit{P. Deligne} [``Faisceaux pervers'', Astérisque 100 (1982; Zbl 0536.14011)]. Denote by \(\tilde{\mathcal D}\) the idempotent completion of a triangulated category \(\mathcal D\), and assume \(\mathcal D\) admits a recollement relative to triangulated categories \(\mathcal D '\) and \(\mathcal D ''\). The main theorem states that \(\tilde{\mathcal D}\) admits a recollement relative to \(\tilde{\mathcal D}'\) and \(\tilde{\mathcal D}''\). The theorem is actually proved for two weaker forms of recollement, left and right recollement, which were introduced by Parshall. The authors also prove that a \(t\)-structure on \(\mathcal D\) induces a \(t\)-structure on \(\tilde{\mathcal D}\). On the other hand, if \(\mathcal D\) admits a recollement, then \(t\)-structures on \(\mathcal D '\) and \(\mathcal D ''\) induce a \(t\)-structure on \(\mathcal D\). As an application of the main theorem it is shown that the induced \(t\)-structure on \(\tilde{\mathcal D}\) is bounded resp. nondegenerate if and only if \(t\)-structures on \(\mathcal D '\) and \(\mathcal D ''\) are bounded resp. nondegenerate.
