In the preprint [Localization in coalgebras. Applications to finiteness conditions, by \textit{J. Gómez-Torrecillas, C. Nastasescu} and \textit{B. Torrecillas}], the so-called `Bass numbers' for a quasi-finite left comodule over a (two-sided) semiperfect coalgebra were introduced as the number of indecomposable injective comodules in the \(i\)-th term of its minimal injective resolution. In the paper under review, the authors investigate the dual notion: Given a quasi-finite right comodule \(M\) over a (two-sided) semiperfect coalgebra, the `Betti numbers' of \(M\) are defined as the number of indecomposable projective comodules in the \(i\)-th term of the minimal projective resolution of \(M\) (obtained from the minimal injective resolution of the left comodule \(\text{Rat}(M^*)\)). After the first preliminary section, the authors introduce in the second section the intermediate notions of (`strictly') `top-finite comodules' and investigate their properties and relations with the dual notions of (strictly) quasi-finite comodules. In the third and main section the Betti numbers are defined and their behavior under duality and localization is studied. The paper concludes with two main applications of minimal projective resolutions, where the authors obtain: a sufficient condition for \(n\)-Gorenstein coalgebras (as presented by \textit{M. J. Asensio, J. A. López-Ramos} and \textit{B. Torrecillas} [in Acta Math. Hung. 85, No. 1-2, 187-198 (1999; Zbl 0992.16032)]) to be right (or left) quasi-co-Frobenius; and a characterization of Hopf algebras with integrals.
