If \(S\) is a semigroup and \(A\) is a subset of \(S\), then the `relative rank' of \(A\) modulo \(S\) is the minimum cardinality of a set \(B\) such that \(A\) and \(B\) together generate \(S\). In the paper under review the authors determine the relative ranks of the semigroup of all endomorphisms of a certain universal algebra (independence algebra) modulo the group of all automorphisms of this algebra and modulo the set of all idempotent endomorphisms of this algebra. In every case the authors obtain an explicit characterization of the extra generators, which are needed to generate all endomorphisms.
