In this paper bivariate and trivariate prewavelets from box spline spaces are constructed, i.e., the prewavelets are piecewise polynomials of fixed degree on a uniform mesh. These new box spline wavelets form a Riesz basis in \( L^2(\mathbb{R}^d), d = 1,2,3\), and have a smaller support than the prewavelets recently constructed by \textit{S. D. Riemenschneider} and \textit{Z. Shen} [J. Approximation Theory 71, 18-38 (1992; Zbl 0772.41019)].
