The author considers the quasilinear Cauchy problem in the complex domain \[ \sum_{|\alpha|=2}E_\alpha(x,u,\nabla_xu)D^\alpha_xu+E_0(x,u,\nabla_xu)=0,\;x=(x_1,x_2)\in\mathbb{C}^2, \] \[ u(0,x_2)=u_0(x_2),\;D_{x_1}u (0,x_2)=u_1(x_2). \] Results are given concerning propagation and branching of singularities of holomorphic initial data. With respect to the linear and nonlinear case, cf. \textit{C. Wagschal} [J. Math. Pures Appl., IX. Sér. 51, 375--397 (1972; Zbl 0242.35016)], new phenomena are here observed, in particular propagation curves may be noncharacteristic.
