Given \((S^{2n+1},\theta)\), the unit sphere in \({\mathbb C}^{n+1}\) with its standard contact form, and a function \(K:S^{2n+1}\to{\mathbb R}\), the problem stated in the article's title is to find \(\tilde\theta\) CR-equivalent to \(\theta\) such that the associated Webster scalar curvature \(R_{\tilde\theta}\) equals \(K\). Under the assumptions that \(K\) is sufficiently smooth and close to \(1\), and has finitely many critical points satisfying a certain non-degeneracy condition and some Morse-theoretic conditions, the author states two existence results. The method of the (short but densely written) proofs is to establish existence of positive solutions of a related PDE, using variational and topological methods.
