If \(Y\) is an uncomplemented subspace of a Banach space \(X\), and both are isomorphic to \(\ell_1\), what can be said about the quotient \(X/Y\)? It has long been known that this situation can arise, but it remains unknown whether there are even two non-isomorphic examples. Here it is shown that all such quotient spaces must have the Schur property, i.e., every weakly convergent sequence therein is automatically norm convergent. The techniques also shed some light on the question whether a quotient of \(C[0,1]\) by \(\ell_1\) needs to have the Dunford-Pettis property.
