An open question has been whether the closed linear subspace of \(L^1\) spanned by the complement of the Rademachers in the Walsh functions is (a) isomorphic to \(L^1\), or (b) an \({\mathcal L}_1\)-space. Answering in the negative questions (a) and (b), the authors show that if \(S\subset\Gamma\) is an infinite Sidon set, then the canonical image of \(L_{\overline{S}}^1 (G)\) is uncomplemented in its second dual and it is not an \({\mathcal L}_1\)-space. Several other results are given, for example, if \(S\) is a Sidon set, then \(L_{\overline{S}}^1 (G)\) has the Dunford-Pettis property.
