Let \(L(y,D) = I_n D_0 + \sum_{j=1}^n a_j(y) D_j\) be a first order system, where \(D_j = \partial / \partial x_j\) and \(a_j\) are smooth functions. The author focuses on the case \(n=3\) and the real reduced dimension of \(L\) in \(y\) is 5. Assuming that the symbol of \(L\) is symmetrizable and that there do not exist double characteristics, he gives sufficient conditions so that the symbol is smoothly symmetrizable.
