If $\Sigma$ is a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$, and $G$ is a simple complex Lie group with Dynkin diagram $\Delta$, the $G$-Hitchin system \[ h: \mathcal{M}_H(\Sigma, G)\rightarrow B(\Sigma, \Delta) \] is a fibration with generic fibres abelian varieties, where $\mathcal{M}_H(\Sigma, G)$ is the moduli space of semistable G-Higgs bundles of degree 1, and $B(\Sigma, \Delta)$ is the space of holomorphic sections of a certain bundle over $\Sigma$. In recent years, it has been noticed that if $\Delta$ is of type ADE, then the $G$-Hitchin system is related to certain quasi-projective Calabi-Yau threefolds. For example, \textit{D. E. Diaconescu} et al. [Math. Res. Lett. 14, No. 5--6, 745--756 (2007; Zbl 1135.32300)] constructed a family $\pi: \mathcal{X}\rightarrow B(\Sigma, \Delta)$ of quasi-projective Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds over the Hitchin base $B(\Sigma, \Delta)$ such that the intermediate Jacobian of $X_b=\pi^{-1}(b)$, \[ J^2(X_b)=H^3(X_b,\mathbb{C})/(F^2H^3(X_b,\mathbb{C})+H^3(X_b,\mathbb{Z})), \] is isomorphic to the Hitchin fibre $h^{-1}(b)$ for generic $b\in B(\Sigma, \Delta)$. \par This paper generalizes this result to the cases of all simple complex Lie groups of any Dynkin type. \par Firstly, for any irreducible Dynkin diagram $\Delta$ of type $B_k$, $C_k$, $F_4$, or $G_2$, the author constructs a family of Calabi-Yau orbifolds (stacks) $[\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{C}]\rightarrow B(\Sigma, \Delta)$ over the Hitchin base $B(\Sigma, \Delta)$, which is the fibre-preserving global quotient of a family $ \mathcal{X}\rightarrow B(\Sigma, \Delta)$ of quasi-projective Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds by a finite group $\mathcal{C}$. Here $\mathcal{C}$ is a subgroup of the graph automorphisms $\mathrm{Aut}(\Delta_h)$ of an irreducible ADE-Dynkin diagram $\Delta_h$, and $\Delta$ is obtained from $\Delta_h$ by folding, i.e. $\Delta=\Delta_h^{\mathcal{C}}$. Furthermore, there is a Zariski open set $B^o\subset B(\Sigma, \Delta)$ such that the restriction $\mathcal{X}^o$ of $\mathcal{X}$ on $B^o$ is smooth. Secondly, it is proved that the intermediate Jacobian $\mathcal{J}^2([\mathcal{X}^o/\mathcal{C}])\rightarrow B^o$ is isomorphic to the $G_{ad}(\Delta)$-Hitchin system, where $G_{ad}(\Delta)$ is the simple adjoint complex Lie group with Dynkin diagram $\Delta$. The intermediate Jacobians are defined by using the integral equivariant cohomology $H_{\mathcal{C}}^3(X_b, \mathbb{Z})$ with respect to the $\mathcal{C}$-action of the fibre $X_b$. Finally, by working with equivariant compact support cohomology, the author obtains the Langlands dual version of the above result, and thus covers all simple simply connected complex Lie groups.
