In a previous paper [J. Number Theory, 120, 13--25 (2006; Zbl 1192.11018)] the author showed that if \(V\) is an \(n\)-dimensional space over an algebraic number field \(K\), and \(V_1,\dots,V_m\) are its proper subspaces, then there exists a point in \(V\setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^m V_i\) with explicitly bounded height. Here this result is strengthened and extended to cover also the case when \(K\) is either the field of all algebraic numbers or the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a perfect field. As an application the author obtained an explicit lower bound for the number of algebraic integers with bounded height in a fixed algebraic number field. Since the appearance of this paper some of its results were strengthened by \textit{É. Gaudron} [Manuscr. Math. 130, No. 2, 159--182 (2009; Zbl 1231.11076)] and \textit{É.Gaudron} and \textit{G. Rémond} [Acta Arith. 154, No. 2, 125--136 (2012; Zbl 1266.11080)].
