As a generalization of super-groups and super-matrices to the case of braid statistics, braided groups and braided matrices are novel algebraic structures living in braided or quasitensor categories. The author constructs braided versions of the standard quantum groups \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\). It is shown that for \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\) in FRT form [\textit{L. D. Faddeev}, \textit{N. Yu. Reshetikhin} and \textit{L. A. Takhtadzhyan}, Leningr. Math. J. 1, No. 1, 193-225 (1990); translation from Algebra Anal. 1, No. 1, 178-206 (1989; Zbl 0715.17015)] and \({\mathcal A}= BG_ q\) the braided group of function algebra type as recalled above, the braided group \({\mathcal H}= BU_ q({\mathfrak g})\) of enveloping algebra type corresponding to \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\) has the same algebraic structure as \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\) but the new coproduct implied by \(\underline {\Delta} L^ i_ j= L^ i_ k \otimes L^ k_ j\) where \(L= l^ + \text{sl}^ -\). The identification \(L=u\) allows \(BU_ q({\mathfrak g})= BG_ q\) as a self-dual braided group. As an application, the degenerate Sklyanin algebra is shown to be isomorphic to the braided matrices \(BM_ q(2)\) of \(\text{sl}_ 2\) type; it is a braided-commutative bialgebra in a braided category. As a second application, the author shows that the quantum double \(D(U_ q (\text{sl}_ 2))\) (also known as the ``quantum Lorentz group'') is the semidirect product as an algebra of two copies of \(U_ q (\text{sl}_ 2)\), and also a semidirect product as a coalgebra if braid statistics is used. In general, if \(H\) is a finite dimensional quasitriangular Hopf algebra with quantum double \(D(H)\), \(A=H^*\) and \({\mathcal A}\) the associated braided group of function algebra type, then \(D(H)\cong {\mathcal A}\rtimes H\) as a semidirect product by the coadjoint action of \(H\) on \({\mathcal A}\) and as a semidirect coproduct with the \(H\) coaction induced by \({\mathcal R}: A\to H\). Various results of this type are found for the doubles of general quantum groups and their semi-classical limits as doubles of the Lie algebras of Poisson-Lie groups.
