The paper deals with planar S-systems as dynamical systems on the positive orthant for which the right hand sides are given by differences of power products (monomials) with real exponents. The authors characterize the permanence of planar S-systems by transforming into a 3-dimensional replicator dynamics. The results are illustrated for some special cases: Selkov's model for glycolytic oscillations and Lotka reactions with generalized mass-action kinetics. Finally, the derived results allow to construct a planar S-systems with three limit cycles.
