For any real semisimple Lie group \(G\) with finite center, with finitely many connected components, and without any compact factor, let \(\text{Cartan}(G)\) be the space of Cartan subgroups of \(G\) and \({\mathcal A}(G)\) be the space of abelian closed connected subgroups of \(G\) for which the spectrum of their corresponding adjoint action is real. One of the main results of the paper under review is that if \(G\) is an almost direct product of groups of real rank 1 and of groups isomorphic to \(\text{SL}_3({\mathbb R})\) or \(\text{SL}_4({\mathbb R})\), then \({\mathcal A}(G)\) is equal to the Chabauty compactification of \(\text{Cartan}(G)\) (i.e., the closure of \(\text{Cartan}(G)\) in the Chabauty topology on the space of all closed subgroups of \(G\)). An explicit description of the topology of \({\mathcal A}(G)\) is provided when \(G\) has real rank 1. When \(G=\text{SL}_3({\mathbb R})\),, one proves that \({\mathcal A}(G)\) is simply connected.
