It is a basic fact of homological algebra that the functor \(\mathrm{Ext}^{1}(- , -)\) is balanced, i.e., its values can be computed utilizing injective resolutions of the first argument or projective resolutions of the second. (in fact, once a ``correct'' resolution for one of the two arguments has been chosen, any quism can be used for the second.) Nothing of that sort is to be expected for complete cohomology. This term refers to various generalizations of Tate cohomology, all of which are obtained via some kind of stabilization process using injective or projective resolutions. All such generalizations produce functors that vanish on objects of finite projective or, respectively, finite injective dimension, and this is the reason why, in general, one cannot expect balance for complete cohomology. In this paper, the authors establish a necessary condition for balance of complete cohomology in extriangulated categories. They also provide a sufficient condition for balance. While technical in nature, they are close in spirit to the above observation on the vanishing of complete cohomology on objects of finite dimension. Both results are proved in a relative context.
