The authors reprove results from [\textit{E. Ullmo} and \textit{A. Yafaev}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 741, 47--66 (2018; Zbl 1408.14140); \textit{Y. Peterzil} and \textit{S. Starchenko}, Adv. Math. 333, 539--569 (2018; Zbl 1430.14038)] on the closure of the image of an algebraic varitety in a compact complex torus. The approach of the new proofs uses directed closed currents. This allows to extend the result for one-dimensional flows to the setting of commutative complex Lie groups which are not necessarily compact. For commutative complex Lie groups also a version of the classical Ax-Lindemann-Weierstraß\( \) theorem is given.
