Studying non-commutative geometry, the authors provide here a formula which preserves the (computational) advantages of the Jaffe-Lesniewski- Osterwalder cocycle but still represents the periodic Chern character. This is obtained by showing that the quoted entire cocycle of a finitely summable unbounded Fredholm module can be retracted to a periodic cocycle, which admits a ``zero-temperature'' limit i.e., which coincides with the transgressed cocycle previously constructed by them [cf. C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 303, 913-918 (1986; Zbl 0617.46075)], in the special case where the Dirac operator \(D\) on a spin manifold \(M\) is invertible. For an interesting analogy with the treatment of local family index theorem compare with \textit{N. Berline, E. Getzler} and \textit{M. Vergne}, `Heat kernels and Dirac operators' (1992; Zbl 0744.58001).
