An algorithm for finding hypergeometric solutions of a class of difference equations [see \textit{M. Petkovšek}, J. Symb. Comput. 14, No. 2/3, 243-264 (1992; Zbl 0761.11008)] is modified as a \(q\)-analogue. Applications include construction of basic hypergeometric series solutions, and definite \(q\)-hypergeometric summation in closed form.
