The main idea developed in this paper is that, at least for some second order elliptic operators, the low frequency components can be well approximated on a relatively coarse grids while high frequency components can be computed only on some fine grids. The authors analyze two as weel as three-scale finite element eigenvalue discretizations for such operators. Five particular examples are carried out in order to underline the efficiency of their strategy.
