The main theorem of the paper states that, given a fibration of the unit 3-sphere by great circles, the distribution of 2-planes orthogonal to the fibres is a tight contact structure (well-known for the case of the Hopf fibration). ``The proof expresses hypothesis and conclusion as differential inequalities involving functions on disks transverse to the fibers, and shows that one inequality implies the other.'' In a sequel [Great circle fibrations and contact structures on odd-dimensional spheres, Preprint, \url{arXiv:1901.06370}], the present author and \textit{J. Yang} show that, for all odd-dimensional spheres of dimension at least 5, there exist smooth great circle fibrations for which the tangent hyperplane distribution orthogonal to the fibres is not a contact structure.
