The authors extend the notion of a purely infinite simple \(C^*\)-algebra to the context of unital rings. The authors prove that a number of basic results, known in the case of \(C^*\)-algebras, also hold in the purely algebraic context. In particular, the algebraic \(K_0\) and \(K_1\)-groups of a purely infinite simple ring follow the same patterns as the corresponding topological \(K\)-groups of purely infinite simple \(C^*\)-algebras [see \textit{J. Cuntz}, Ann. Math. (2) 113, 181-197 (1981; Zbl 0437.46060)]. In addition, the authors prove that every countable Abelian group is isomorphic to \(K_0\) of some purely infinite simple regular ring.
