A finite set \({\mathcal H}\) of hyperplanes in \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) is called an arrangement. It determines a partition of \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) into open topological cells, the face lattice \(L({\mathcal H})\) of which is studied by the author. He shows \(L({\mathcal H})\) to be shellable. To \({\mathcal H}\) there is assigned a zonotope \(\tilde Z\) in \({\mathbb{R}}^{d+1}\), and a polytope \((\tilde Z^*\) polar to \(\tilde Z)\) \(H^+:=\tilde Z^*\cap ({\mathbb{R}}^ d\times {\mathbb{R}}^+_ 0)\). The topology of intervals in \(L({\mathcal H})\) is studied by relating \(L({\mathcal H})\) to the face lattice \(L({\mathcal H}^+)\) of \(H^+\). - Remarks are added concerning generalisation to oriented matroids.
