    Using the Sz.-Nagy--Foiaş dilation theory [\textit{B.\,Sz.-Nagy} and \textit{C.\,Foiaş}, ``Harmonic analysis of operators on Hilbert spaces'' (Budapest:\ Akadémiai Kiadó; Amsterdam--London:\ North--Holland) (1970; Zbl 0201.45003)], the main result of the paper under review can be formulated as follows: Theorem. Let \(W\in\mathcal B(\mathcal H)\) be an injective contraction, \(U_+\in\mathcal B(\mathcal K_+)\) and \(U\in\mathcal B(\mathcal K)\) its minimal isometric and unitary contraction, respectively. Let \(R\in\mathcal B(\mathcal R)\) be the residual part of \(U\). Let \(U'\in\mathcal B(\mathcal H')\) be a unitary operator which is a quasi-affine transform of \(W\), i.e., there exists a quasi-affinity \(\Lambda\:\mathcal H'\to \mathcal H\) for which \(W\Lambda=\Lambda U'\), and let \(\Lambda_+\in \mathcal B(\mathcal H',\mathcal K_+)\), \(\Lambda_+=\text{s-lim}_{n\to\infty}U_+^n\Lambda {U'}^{-n}\), be its lifting. Then (a)~\(W\) is of class \(C_{\cdot1}\); (b)~\(\mathcal R\cap M_+(\mathcal L)=\{0\}\) (here, \(M_+(\mathcal L)=\bigvee_0^{\infty}U^n\mathcal L\), \(\mathcal L=\overline{(U-W)\mathcal H}\)); (c)~ \(\Lambda_+\in\mathcal B(\mathcal H,\mathcal R)\) is a quasi-affinity such that \(R\Lambda_+=\lambda_+ U'\). This complements results of \textit{L.\,Kérchy} [Banach Cent.\ Publ.\ 30, 191--201 (1994; Zbl 0807.47005)]. on unitary asymptotes of \(C_{\cdot1}\) contractions. Some connections with the Grossmann theory of nested Hilbert spaces and generalized eigenvalues are established. The results are applied to the study of the baker map.
