Let \(V\) be a finite dimensional \({\mathbb C}\)-vector space and let \(u\) be its nilpotent endomorphism. The set \({\mathcal F}_u\) of all \(u\)-stable complete flags in \(V\) is called the Springer fiber since it can be identified with the fiber over \(u\) of the Springer resolution. In this paper the authors concentrate on the case \(u^2=0\) and give three characterizations of the singular irreducible components of \({\mathcal F}_u\). First, they give the combinatorial description of standard tableaux corresponding to singular components. Second, they prove that a component is singular if and only if its Poincaré polynomial is not palindromic. Third, they show that a component is singular when it has too many intersections of codimension one with other components.
