The paper discusses some of the basic properties of a nonlinear control system. In particular the paper addresses the question to what extent desirable objectives like accessibility, observability, invertibility and partial linearization are altered by small changes in the systems parameters. That is, are the above concepts structural or generic or residual? Because the forementioned notions are characterized in differential geometric terms, the whole machinery necessary for application of Thom's transversality theorem comes available. In this way the paper gives some useful extensions of results known to be valid for linear control systems.
