Let \(K\) be the function field of a curve \(C\) over a field \(k\). Using the approach of \textit{B. Hassett} and \textit{Y. Tschinkel} [Invent. Math. 163, No. 1, 171--190 (2006; Zbl 1095.14049)], the author is able to show a number of results on weak approximation for a projective and separably rationally connected \(K\)-variety with at least one \(K\)-rational point. To pass to arbitrary fields, the author introduces the assumption of separability (i.e. all points considered have separable residue field over the ground field). Weak approximation is thus established in a number of cases for large or local fields \(k\): (1) \(X(K)\) is Zariski dense if \(k\) is large; (2) \(X\) satisfies weak approximation if \(k\) is an infinite algebraic extension of a finite field; (3) \(X\) satisfies weak approximation for a dense subset of \(C(k)\) if \(k\) is non-archimedean and local, and there is trivial \(R\)-equivalence on one fiber of \(\mathcal{X}_p\) over points of good reduction; (4) the specialisation map is surjetice at finitely many points of good reduction if \(X/K\) is a smooth cubic hypersurface with \(|k|>10\); and (5) \(X\) satisfies weak approximation at any point of good reduction if the characteristic of \(k\) is not 2 or 3 and \(|kl| > 47\).
