Constrained mechanical systems in their index 3 formulation are considered. It is shown that the Gear-Gupta-Leimkuhler index-reduction preserves the stability behaviour of the system, whereas Baumgarten stabilization introduces additional eigenvalues for the linearized problem. A similar investigation can be found in the paper of \textit{B. Simeon, C. Führer} and \textit{P. Rentrop} [Numer. Math. 64, No. 4, 521-539 (1993; Zbl 0797.65054)].
