A well known conjecture states that, for any irreducible \(\mathbb Q\)-homology 3-sphere \(Y\), the following properties are equivalent: (1) \(Y\) is orderable (its fundamental group is left-orderable); (2) \(Y\) is not an \(L\)-space (its Heegaard Floer homology is not minimal); and (3) \(Y\) admits a taut foliation. The paper under review is the outcome of a project to explore this conjecture, on which the author has been working since 2004. It presents a census \(\mathcal Y\) of 307\,301 \(\mathbb Q\)-homology 3-spheres, which are known to be hyperbolic and distinct. The main result of this paper supports this conjecture by showing that, out of the hyperbolic \(\mathbb Q\)-homology 3-spheres in \(\mathcal Y\), exactly 144\,298 are \(L\)-spaces and exactly 163\,003 are non-\(L\)-spaces; at least 162\,341 of those non-\(L\)-spaces admit taut foliations; at least 80\,236 of those non-\(L\)-spaces are orderable; and at least 110\,940 of those \(L\)-spaces are not orderable. The paper introduces and improves very interesting methods to achieve this result. For instance, a new combinatorial criterion called foliar orientation is used in the construction of taut foliations.
