The authors study methods to associate a coalition game with each strategic game. They provide axiomatic characterizations of the values of matrix games and of the lower values of finite two player zero-sum games. Finally, the authors provide axiomatic characterizations of the method defined in \textit{J. von Neumann} and \textit{O. Morgenstern} [Theory of games and economic behavior, Princeton University Press (1944; Zbl 0063.05930)] as well as a newly defined method based on the lower value.
