The paper is concerned with the linear span \(M_L\) of all derivatives of certain lattice diagram determinants \(\Delta_L\). A (general) lattice diagram is a finite subset \(L=\{(p_1,q_1),\dots,(p_n,q_n)\}\) of \(\mathbb{N}\times \mathbb{N}\), and its corresponding determinant \(\Delta_L\) is the bihomogeneous polynomial \(\det(x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j})_{i,j=1}^n\). Here, the author considers lattice diagrams which are obtained from Ferrers diagrams \(\mu\) by removing \(k\) cells from the ``shadow'' of some fixed cell \((i,j)\), where the shadow of cell \((i,j)\) consists of all the cells \((i^\prime,j')\) in the Ferrers diagram with \(i^\prime\geq i\) and \(j^\prime\geq j\). It is shown that the dimension of the sum of the spaces \(M_L\), where \(L\) is any diagram obtained by removing \(k\) cells from the shadow of some fixed cell \((i,j)\), is at most \({s\choose k}n!\), where \(n+k\) is the number of all cells in the Ferrers diagram \(\mu\), and where \(s\) is the number of all cells in the shadow of cell \((i,j)\). This result is related to the Garsia--Haiman conjecture (also known as \(n!\) conjecture).
