The main result of the paper is the following perturbation theorem. Let \(A\) be a bounded selfadjoint operator and let \(K\) be an element of the Neumann-Schatten ideal \(\mathcal{S}_p\) with \(p >1\). Then there exists a constant \(C_p\) such that \[ \sum\limits_{\lambda \in \sigma_d(A+K)} \text{dist}(\lambda,\sigma(A))^p \leq C_p \| K \|_p^p, \] where the sum is extended over the set of discrete eigenvalues counted according to their algebraic multiplicity. In the case \(p=2\), the author obtains \(C_2=2\). A main ingredient for the proof is a corresponding result by \textit{M. I. Gil'} [J. Math. Inequal. 4, No. 4, 517--522 (2010; Zbl 1213.15016)] in the finite dimensional case. \hskip 1em As an application, a perturbation result for the eigenvalues of unitary operators is derived with the aid of the Cayley transform. Another application concerns the distribution of the zeros of Cauchy transforms of a finite, complex Borel measure on the unit cicle which is related to the so-called Blaschke condition.
