In this paper the Hochschild homology \(HH_ *(A;A)\) and the cyclic homology are computed for quantum groups, i.e. quantized rings of (algebraic or formal) functions on complex semisimple Lie groups. The computations are based on the spectral sequence of [\textit{B. L. Feigin} and \textit{B. L. Tsygan}, Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 17, 86--87 (1983; Zbl 0544.17011)] which opens a way towards cyclic homology via Lie algebra homology. It is used to compute the Hochschild homology of the quantum groups in question. Its \(E^ 2\)-term is the Poisson cohomology in the sense of \textit{J. Brylinski} [J. Differ. Geom. 28, No. 1, 93--114 (1988; Zbl 0634.58029)] of the modelling Lie group, and the spectral sequence degenerates at \(E^ 2\). The authors stress the fact that this should mean: the quasiclassical limit of the spectral sequence already determines its quantum limit. The cyclic homology is then readily derived from the Hochschild homology. An appendix gives some explicit computations on \(G=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb C)\).
