A nonlinear dissipative evolution equation on a Hilbert space is considered to establish for it sufficient conditions to possess an inertial manifold. The corresponding differential equations are semilinear parabolic ones with principal (linear) differential operator being sectorial and having compact resolvent. The assumptions are to include Navier-Stokes equations, the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, the Cahn-Hilliard equation as well as some reaction-diffusion equations. Using elliptic regularisation, the authors include in the circle of investigated problems the case of Korteweg-de Vries equation whose linear spatial operator is not self-adjoint. Presentation is given in detail as well as all needed preliminaries.
