It was shown by the second author and \textit{P. G. Bao} [BIT 28, No. 4, 852-866 (1988; Zbl 0661.65046)] that many different centered forms of a multivariate polynomial could be generated from various arrangements of the variables of the polynomial. This concept is complete and systematized in the present paper. I.e., to any monomial of a given polynomial a basic tableau is related, that consists of the variables \(x_ i\), the ``centers'' \(c_ i\) and the differences \(x_ i-c_ i\). Permutations of the rows of this tableau lead to further tableaus which are utilized to define various centered forms of the monomial. Linear combinations of the centered forms of all monomials of the polynomial give centered forms of it. Finally, the problem of optimality of centered forms is investigated with two subclasses of the forms generated by the above-mentioned procedure.
