A general class of data association problems in multitarget tracking is related to multidimensional assignment problems in such a way that Lagrangian relaxation based algorithms are applicable. The objective function is derived from a negative log-posterior function or a likelihood function for each of the tracks. An assignment formulation of multiple hypothesis tracking for multitarget tracking is also considered.
