Let \(\Omega\) be a symmetric cone in a Euclidean real vector space \(V\), i.e. an open convex cone which is self-dual homogeneous. The vector space \(V\) can be equipped with a Jordan algebra structure such that \(\Omega\) is the interior of the cone of squares. Let \(G\) be the conformal group of the Jordan algebra \(V\). In this paper one studies the compression semigroup \(\Gamma\) of \(\Omega\): \(\Gamma= \{g\in G\mid g(\Omega) \subset \Omega\}\). -- One proves the decomposition \(\Gamma= \Gamma^+ G_0 \Gamma^-\), where \(G_0\) is the group of linear automorphisms of \(\Omega\), \(\Gamma^+\) and \(\Gamma^-\) are Abelian semigroups which are isomorphic to the cone \(\overline {\Omega}\). It is also shown that the elements of \(\Gamma\) are contractions of the \(G_0\)-invariant Riemannian metric on \(\Omega\). Further one studies the symmetric space of Cayley type \(G/G_0\). The Lie algebra \({\mathbf g}\) of \(G\) is decomposed as \({\mathbf g}= {\mathbf g}_0+ {\mathbf q}\) \(({\mathbf g}_0= \text{Lie} (G_0))\). There is a closed convex cone \(C\subset {\mathbf q}\) such that \(\Gamma= G_0 \exp C\). Finally, one shows that \(\Gamma\) is the intersection with \(G\) of the Ol'shanskij semigroup which is a complex semigroup in the complexification of \(G\). This study uses Jordan algebra methods which are particularly suited to the topic.
