A certain symmetric four-step method is considered for a numerical computation of eigenvalues of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The author proposes an extended Numerov-type method with a parameter choosen in such a way that for the scalar test equation the phase-lag attends its minimum, which is equivalent to the minimum of an exponential error. The numerical results are compared with those given by the extended Numerov method of \textit{V. Fack} and \textit{G. Vanden Berghe} [J. Phys. A 20, 4153-4160 (1987; Zbl 0626.65079)] for several potentials.
