The authors investigate the Hochschild cohomology of a pointed coalgebra \(C\) with coefficients in a certain one-dimensional \(C\)-bicomodule, and relate this to the coradical filtration of \(C\). This cohomology is computed precisely when \(C\) is a Taft Hopf algebra. As an application, pointed Hopf algebras of dimension \(p^3\), \(p\) prime, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero are classified. This result was independently proved with different techniques by \textit{N. Andruskiewitsch} and \textit{H.-J. Schneider} [J. Algebra 209, No. 2, 658-691 (1998)], and \textit{S. Caenepeel} and \textit{S. Dăscălescu} [J. Algebra 209, No. 2, 622-634 (1998; Zbl 0917.16016)].
