This paper extends the concept of a free semigroup (as introduced by \textit{J. Bertin} and \textit{F. Carbonne} [J. Algebra 49, 81-95 (1977; Zbl 0498.14016)]) from the class of numerical semigroups to the class of affine semigroups. The authors give a method for constructing free affine semigroups based on the concept of a mixed dominating matrix and give an algorithm to check if a given semigroup is a free semigroup. They also introduce a related class of semigroups called SAS-semigroups.
