The authors study composition operators \(C_\varphi: f\mapsto f\circ \varphi\) between the Nevanlinna-type spaces \(N, N^+, M\) and \(N^p\). Here \(N\) is the usual Nevanlinna class of holomorphic quotients of bounded analytic functions on the unit disk \(\mathbb D\), \(N^+\) is the Smirnov-class and, for \(p\geq 1\), \[ N^p=\left\{f\in H(\mathbb D): {\|f\|}_{N^p}:=\sup_{0<r<1}\left(\int_{\partial\mathbb D}\log^p(1+|f(r\xi)|) d\sigma(\xi)\right)^{1/p}<\infty\right\} \] The space \(M\) was investigated by \textit{H. O. Kim} [Can. J. Math. 40, No. 3, 718-741 (1988; Zbl 0646.30033)] and is defined as \[ M=\Biggl\{f\in H(\mathbb D): {\|f\|}_M:=\int_{\partial\mathbb D}\log(1+Mf(\xi)) d\sigma(\xi)<\infty\Biggr\}, \] where \(Mf(\xi)=\sup_{0<r<1}|f(r\xi)|\) is the radial maximal function of \(f\). It is known that \(N \supset N^+ \supset M \supset N^p \supset N^q\) for \(1<p<q\). The goal of the paper is to characterize those holomorphic maps \(\varphi\) of \(\mathbb D\) that induce ``metrically bounded'' or ``metrically compact'' operators \(C_\varphi: N\) or \( N^+ \to M\), \(N\) or \(N^+\to N^p\) and \(M\to N^p\). Here an operator \(T:X\to Y\) between vector spaces endowed with a translation invariant metric \(d\) is called metrically compact if \(T\) maps \textit{every} closed ball \(\{f\in X: d(f,0) \leq R\}\) into a relatively compact set in \(Y\). (Note that scalar multiplication is not assumed to be continuous). The characterizations are given in terms of Carleson-measures and Sarason-type conditions. The latter being conditions on the behaviour of the Poisson-kernel \({1-|z|^2\over |\eta- z|^2}\) evaluated at \(z=\varphi(w)\). To conclude, the authors propose the problem of characterizing those \(\varphi\) for which \(C_\varphi\) induces a metrically bounded or metrically compact operator on \(M\).
