Motivated by some statistical problems the location of convex and affine combinations of two matrices \(A\) and \(B\) with respect to several matrix partial orderings \(A \preceq B\) is studied. Besides the Löwner partial ordering with respect to the interpolatory (location of convex combinations of \(A\) and \(B\)) and extrapolatory (location of affine combinations of \(A\) and \(B\)) properties the left-star partial ordering \(\preceq_L \), the right-star partial ordering \(\preceq_R \), the minus partial ordering \(\preceq\) and the \( \preceq_{GL}\) partial ordering are discussed. This discussion is also extended on the case of the matrix-valued function \(f(A)\) and inter- and extrapolatory properties of \(f\)-orderings. Several examples illustrating the properties of orderings are given.
