Let \(S=k[x_0,\ldots, x_n]\) be a polynomial ring over an infinite field \(k\). The authors present a method for bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of an \(S\)-module \(M\) in terms of the regularities of modules that form an approximation system for \(M\). This method is inspired by a paper by \textit{A. Conca} and \textit{J. Herzog} [Collect. Math. 54, No. 2, 137--152 (2003; Zbl 1074.13004)] which concerns the regularity of products of linear ideals. In the paper under review, the regularity of systems of ideals generated by linear ideals in \(S\) is studied. As consequence we can deduce Sturmfels' conjecture: ``If \(I\) is the vanishing ideal of \(d\) subspaces, then the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \(I\) is at the most \(d\)'', and we obtain a result proved by \textit{H. Derksen} and \textit{J. Sidman} [Adv. in Math. 172, (2), 151--157 (2002; Zbl 1040.13009)] which regards the regularity of ideals of an arrangement of linear subspaces of projective space. A bound on the regularity of the module of derivations tangent to a hyperplane arrangement is proved.
