This paper on geometric analysis on compact Hermitian manifolds studies a Dirichlet problem for an elliptic partial differential equation for Hermitian metrics. Its main result is the following: Main Theorem: Let \(E\) be a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Hermitian manifold \(\bar M\) with nonempty boundary \(\partial M\), and \(\phi\) a holomorphic section of \(E\). For any Hermitian metric \(\varphi\) on the restriction of \(E\) to \(\partial M\) there is a unique so-called Hermitian Yang-Mills-Higgs metric \(H\) on \(E\) such that \(H=\varphi\) on \(\partial M\), where \(H\) satisfies the following vortex equation \[ \Lambda F_H-\frac{\sqrt{-1}}{2}\phi\otimes\phi^{*H}+\lambda\frac{\sqrt{-1}}{2}\text{Id}=0. \] Here \(F_H\) is the curvature of the metric connection determined by \(\overline\partial_E\) and the metric \(H\), \(\phi^{*H}\) is the adjoint of the section \(\phi\) with respect to the metric \(H\), \(\lambda\) is a real constant, and \(\Lambda\) denotes contraction with a not necessarily \(d\)-closed nondegenerate \((1,1)\)-form \(\omega\) (often but not necessarily a Kähler form). The proof of the Main Theorem uses the heat equation method, and follows Hamilton's techniques of a priori estimates with differential inequalities and monotonically evolving quantities together with generalities from geometric partial differential equations. No applications of the Main Theorem are given in this paper, but the authors remark that vortex equations of the type considered here are useful in connection with the \(\phi\)-stability of \(E\) as discussed by Bradlow.
