For linear and nonlinear ill-posed inverse problems in Hilbert spaces, the paper studies Landweber iterations in Hilbert scales. The focus is on the case \(s \leq 0\) when the Hilbert scale operator \(L^{-2s}\) appearing in the iteration acts as a preconditioner. Moreover, significantly reduced conditions for regularization are used in the analysis. The assumptions are verified for several examples and numerical results illustrate the theory.
