Let \(B(H)\) be the \(C^*\)-algebra of all bounded linear operators acting on a Hilbert space \(H\) and let \(S\), \(T\in B(H)\). \textit{K. Gustafson} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 74, 488--492 (1968; Zbl 0172.40702)] defined the first antieigenvalue of \(T\) by \[ \mu_1(T)=\inf\left\{\frac {\text{Re}\langle Tx,x \rangle}{\|Tx\|}:Tx\neq 0,\;\|x\|=1\right\}. \] In this note, the author introduces the joint antieigenvalue of \(T\) and \(S\) by the relation \[ \mu_1(T,S)=\inf\left\{ \frac{\text{Re}\langle Sx,x\rangle} {\|Tx\|\|Sx\|}:Tx\neq 0,\;Sx\neq 0\right\}. \] In [\textit{K. Gustafson} and \textit{M. Seddighin}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 178, No.~2, 603--611 (1993; Zbl 0803.47008); J. Math. Anal. Appl. 143, 327--340 (1989; Zbl 0696.47004); Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 2005, No. 10, 1543--1554 (2005; Zbl 1094.47030)], the author and Gustafson have studied \(\mu_1(T)\) for normal operators on finite- and infinite-dimensional spaces, and here the author extends these results to \(\mu_1(T,S)\), where \(T\) and \(S\) are two operators belonging to the same closed normal subalgebra of \(B(H)\).
