The starting point of the paper is the problem whether the approximation property of a dual Banach space \(X^*\) implies its metric approximation property; this is known to be true when \(X^*\) or \(X^{**}\) has the Radon--Nikodým property (Theorem~A). Recently, the author together with \textit{Å.\,Lima} [Math.\ Ann.\ 333, No.\,3, 471--484 (2005; Zbl 1097.46012)] introduced the notion of the weak (bounded) approximation property that turned out to be closely related to the problem at hand. (The reader is cautioned that this weak (bounded) approximation property is different from and more rewarding than the one suggested in [\textit{C.\,Choi} and \textit{J.\,M.\,Kim}, J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 316, No.\,2, 722--735 (2006; Zbl 1098.46016)].) Here the author proves a result that implies that the weak bounded approximation property implies the bounded approximation property if \(X^*\) or \(X^{**}\) has the Radon--Nikodým property. This in turn allows her to give a new proof of Theorem~A and similar results.
