The author proves that a map is projective-stably equivalent to a monomorphism if and only if its kernel is torsionless, that is, a first syzygy. Consequently, the author answers a question posed by \textit{M. Auslander} and \textit{M. Bridger} [Stable module theory, Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 94 (1969; Zbl 0204.36402)].
