The authors study the Taylor spectrum \(\sigma_T({\mathbb T})\) and the Taylor essential spectrum \(\sigma_{Te}({\mathbb T})\) of a \(2\)-variable weighted shift \({\mathbb T}=(T_1,T_2)\). Several results showing deep differences between the single variable and \(2\)-variable case are obtained. In particular, it is proved that \(\| W_{\alpha^{(1)}}\| <\| W_{\alpha^{(0)}}\| \), where \(W_{\alpha^{(j)}}\) denotes the \(j\)-th horizontal slice of \(T_1\), is sufficient for the disconnectedness of the Taylor spectrum of \({\mathbb T}\). It is shown that, for every \(k\geq 1\), it is possible to create \(k\) connected components in the Taylor essential spectrum of \({\mathbb T}\), while maintaining its hyponormality. Finally, it is observed that \(k\)-hyponormality (\(k\geq 1\)) is not sufficient to guarantee that \(\partial\sigma_T({\mathbb T})= \sigma_{Te}({\mathbb T})\).
