The author studies the notion of \(k\)-Gorenstein modules over Artin algebras. Let \(U\) be a module over a ring \(\Lambda\) and \(\Gamma=\text{End}_\Lambda(U)\). The module \(U\) is called \(k\)-Gorenstein provided that \(\text{Ext}^j_\Lambda(X,U)=0\) for all submodules \(X\subset\text{Ext}_\Gamma^i(N,U)\), where \(N\in\text{mod-}\Gamma^{op}\) is arbitrary, and for all \(1\leq j\leq i\leq k\). The main result of the paper characterizes \(k\)-Gorenstein modules in two different ways. On one hand it is shown that a module \(U\) is \(k\)-Gorenstein if and only if for every \(0<i\leq k\) the \(i\)-th term of the minimal injective resolution of \(U\) has \(U\)-resolution dimension at most \(i-1\). On the other hand it is shown that a module \(U\) is \(k\)-Gorenstein if and only if a certain \(\text{Ext}\)-functor preserves monomorphisms. The results of the paper generalize classical results of Auslander on Gorenstein modules.
