    The authors prove a continuation property for strong solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in \({\mathbb R}^3\). Let \(\alpha\in (0,1)\), \(T>0\) and \(u_0\in H^1_{\sigma}({\mathbb R}^3)\), the ``solenoidal'' Sobolev space. Suppose that \(u\in C(0,T;H^1_{\sigma}({\mathbb R}^3))\cap C^1(0,T;H^1_{\sigma}({\mathbb R}^3)) \cap C(0,T;H^3_{\sigma}({\mathbb R}^3))\) is a strong solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. If the vorticity \(\omega=\nabla \times u\) statisfies the Besov estimate \[ \omega\in L^{\frac{2}{2-\alpha}}(0,T;\dot{B}^{-\alpha}_{\infty,\infty}({\mathbb R}^3)) \cap L^{\frac{2}{2-\alpha}}(0,T;\dot{B}^{-1-\alpha}_{\infty,\infty}({\mathbb R}^3)), \] then \(u\) can be extended to \((0,T')\) with \(T'>T\).
